Understanding public access television

In case you’ve been living under a rock, alone in a desert:
Rob McCausland writes:
Similarly, public access television (programming produced by the public itself) provides opportunities for people to use and meaningfully process information that the other forms of access television cannot. Comparatively, non-public access television is just “more television,” while public access television is actually community engagement.

Public Access Community Television is not the same as “regular TV”, it doesn’t compete with TV or the Internet. It shouldn’t have to either. It exist for the community to utilize, to share it’s own news and information, culture, ethnicity, views and opinions, a free flow of information. It provides an opportunities for collaborative partnerships, creative visual arts, a place to build bridges and tear down walls through public dialogue in a unique way, with a support system and network that is simply not matched anywhere else.

Yes you may have hundreds of cable channels on cable or the Internet, but how many of those channels reflect the interest of our community while, at the same time provides training and tools, studio space, edit suites, professional support needed to enable you to present your own programming or better still, participate in the making of what you are seeing, at the level that your public access channel can ?

Have you ever wondered, while you’re watching regular commercial TV, what it would be like to be running the camera or editing the show, or acting in front of that camera, or given your own play by play critique of that meeting? Public Access gives you that niche like no other channel.

In Worcester there are three access channels two run by departments of the City of Worcester, channels 11 (WPS) and 12 (City hall ), and channel 13 (WCCA TV “the People’s Channel”, public access). While channels 11 and 12 reflects the interest of those specific city departments, WCCA TV serves the rest of us and the programming there reflects the interest of those in our community who participate. All three channels play an important role in our community.

I’ve often said that WCCA TV 13 is more than just TV it’s a community resource. It’s really more than that. It’s your place to learn, create and connect and become empowered.

If you would like to learn more about public access television visit our WCCA TV‘s website or the Alliance for Community Media. You can also call me via phone at 508-755-1880, I be happy to help anyone understand the reality and value of public access television.

Is the THE SUPREME Court’s elimination of corporate campaign spending limits undermining the Constitution?

A big YES for this editorial:
Voices will be drowned out

“It is well established that corporations are “creatures of law’’ with purposes and powers such as are authorized and constricted by the enabling legal authority. Corporations were never seen as having any claim to so-called natural rights. The history of law therefore argues against rigidly equating persons and corporations.” Bill August

It appears that now apparently, in consideration to this recent Supreme Court motion and companies like Comcast and members of the U.N trying to impose certain policies concerning internet use and the net, and like health care, your right and capacity to distribute and access a public forum and information is corroding while giving way to the privileged few.
Without a mechanism to level the playing filed for all people, our democracy may be a great risk.

WCCA TV presents programing that reflects the interest of the citizens of Worcester. It is the only station in Worcester that is TV BY, FOR, and OF, the PEOPLE.

A cutting edge pioneer in the industry, WCCA TV was one of the very first TV stations in Massachusetts to upload full length video on line and to place that technology in the hands of Worcester citiznes who participate. In fact, WCCA TV has one the largest on-line archived community pages containing full length video works in the nation.

During my ninteen plus years at WCCA, I have seen many WCCA interns, students and volunteers develop career skills and move on to work as professionals in the TV or movie industry in Massachusetts, New York, Hollywood and other creative centers. Today I see quite a few heading in those same directions who involved at WCCA TV.

Each day, I am pleased to continue to see and work with organizations who full advantage of WCCA cable and webcast services that helped them achieve valuable outreach. Many individuals, artist, religious, activist, politicos, municipal leaders, business interest, educators, and cutural and social service institutions utilize the station’s facility to promote events, causes, or share cultural experiences and more. Seriously watch for a week and you will be amazed at what the people of Worcester are doing at WCCA TV.

Each day WCCA TV is elevating someone or some cause or program. While offering a window in Worcester. That all translates to economic impact and community development. The work accomplished at WCCA every day is one that nurtures democracy, at a grass roots and organic level, through a free flow of news and information coming directly from the people, the true source, the heart and fiber of this city our communities and neighborhoods.

Even though WCCA communty programs just won three new Pegasus awards, in 2009, two for community productions and one for our website. We are not without challenges.

In order to meet community media needs at large, WCCA intends to renovate it’s Youth Prodcution Studios in the basement of our building and to also improve our computer and digital technology resources which will enable us to help more community memebrs while keeping staff levels at a minimal. This is where your help and support means so much to us. We need your help to continue. When you purchase just a couple of tickets for our Harvest Moon Dinner Dance, or a page in the event’s program book you will help make that possible. Plus we’ll be celebrating with YOU. We are most gratful to you for your participation, viewership, support.

I really hope you will celebrate this mile stone for WCCA ,as an anchor instituion in Worcester celebrating 25 years as a community resource, by attending our “HARVEST MOON DINNER DANCE” fund rasier.
